Deer Creek School District officials will break ground on the district's fourth elementary school this week, and crews are expected to start moving dirt next week.
Construction likely will take two years, said Richard Vrooman, district director of operations. The school should open August 2010.
"It's going to be beautiful. Everyone is excited. We needed it yesterday," Vrooman said.
The new school will be on NW 192 about a quarter of a mile east of State Highway 74. Since it is on the south side of NW 192, it is in the Oklahoma City city limits, he said.
The groundbreaking will be 9 a.m. Wednesday. Crews will start working Jan. 30 if weather permits, Vrooman said.
The school is similar to Rose Union Elementary School, which opened in August 2006, but it will be four classrooms bigger, Vrooman said. Rose Union teachers and administrators gave suggestions for improving the design. In addition, the new school's cafeteria will be a safe room.
Renaissance Architects, which designed Rose Union and several other Deer Creek projects, designed this 50,000 square-feet, one-story building with masonry exterior.
Board members started discussing a name for the fourth elementary school during their Jan. 14 meeting. Board member John Robertson said members will ask for suggestions from students and teachers before making a decision.
Deer Creek Schools Foundation members suggested naming the school after John Tarr, who helped form the foundation. Another suggestion is Grove Elementary after the housing addition near the school, Vrooman said.
In the past, board members have named schools after the one-room school houses that were in the area. Prairie Vale and Rose Union elementary schools are named after one-room school houses. Leaders likely will decide on a name by May, Vrooman said.
